China SHOPPING

Because of China's commercial status as China's most open port city, it has the widest variety of goods to be found in the nation, with the exception of Hong Kong. Ritzy chrome shopping malls stand alongside the local dingy state-run stores, inundating the consumer with both foreign name brands and domestic goods. Two of China's main roads, Nanjing Lu and Huaihai Lu, have become the city's shopping meccas.

Traditional treasures, Chinese arts and crafts, and such special exports as silk and linen are available in stores as well as on the street. In the city's nooks and crannies, outdoor markets give a good view of China's bustling street life. Food markets are scattered in every neighborhood. Bird and flower markets offer everything from bonsai plants to songbirds. Most interesting, however, are the antiques markets, at which local hawkers sell their pieces of Chinese history -- some real, some not.
